Reporter: Deputy Commander He, people in your hometown don’t know you very well. I only heard about you when I went to Beijing for an interview last year…
He Weidong: Let me tell you, I am a pure Dongtai native! My hometown is in Xuhe, Dongtai, and my parents are from Xuhe. My father, He Liangyu, was a cadre from the south who enlisted in the army in 1946. My father was an instructor at the Nanjing Military Academy when I was young. I lived with my mother in my hometown for a period of time. Primary school for one year.
My impression of my hometown is still very good. The water system is very developed and is everywhere. There is a river in front of the school, just cross the bridge. The main crops are corn and wheat. I remember that my grandfather took the unripe wheat and fry it, grind it, and then knead it into a ball, called “mai nennen”.
The breakfast in my hometown is also very special. My grandmother got up early and raised corn grits porridge. The salt was crab dregs, which were smashed and pickled by small crabs in the sea, and dipped and eaten with chopsticks. There are also more clams in the sea.
At that time, the conditions of our family were poor, so we made a white-faced trowel and dipped it in red for the New Year. On the first day of the new year, we went to kowtow to my grandfather and grandmother for New Year’s greetings, and gave a happy package with two cents in it. Grandpa has the skill of playing cotton. He often rides a bicycle and carries a bow to play cotton. He takes me to play cotton. Because when I got there, I would take care of a meal. On the meal, I would steam a piece of bacon. My grandfather was reluctant to eat it, so he gave it to me. This impressed me too deeply.
The life I lived there when I was a child will never be forgotten. I have a lot of affection for my hometown. If you leave, you will never forget your ancestors! Just because of the military affairs, it is impossible to go back often. I have been away from my hometown for more than 40 years since I studied at Dongjin Primary School, and I have never had the opportunity to go back to my hometown to see it. After her mother passed away, according to her wish, the direction of the tomb was facing Dongtai. My father still contacted me today and asked me when I was free to accompany him back to Xuhe. If there are no special circumstances, I will definitely accompany my old father back to see after a few months, but I have not visited my hometown for more than 40 years.
